Angie appears the next morning, same as usual, first shift of the day. She frowns at me, at the empty blanket warmer that needs to be refilled, at the man in 17 who fell off a ladder with a circular saw and gutted his thigh like a fish. The EKG has been “fixed,” the leads switched back, the order of the universe returned to a normal chaos. It’s Friday, which is busy for us. I watch Angie as she unplugs the EKG from its charger and lopes around the nursing station again. Helene calls her into her office, the EKG machine left in the hallway between beds J and K. I plug it back in. I don’t want the charger to die if there is some kind of regular emergency. It should be kept plugged in for especially this reason. In just a couple minutes, it’s all over: Angie, stomping across the slick floor, out of Helene’s office, past the nurses’ station, phone in her hand.
